Mould Cleaning at a Rectorial Library in Kent

This project encompassed many different elements and took five months to plan and execute. We provided training for book conservation students of West Dean College, were consultants and trainers for the Parochial Church Council (PCC) volunteers and also supplied practical conservation work on books in this 19th Century Rectorial Library.

SCC were able to provide the following:

  • Assessment and treatment plan
  • Project plan management
  • Environmental control advice including a deep clean of the library
  • Training of volunteers and conservation students
  • Health and safety awareness training
  • Remedial conservation and preventive conservation
  • Final report and recommendations

Shortly after our project the library was moved to Canterbury Cathedral Library on long-term loan.

This project provided valuable training for the students, giving them real practical experience and an insight into project work. Involving students enabled the PCC to have a possibly expensive project undertaken for a more manageable amount.
